3D model of a mooring chain link - IVM Technologies

Mooring chain inspection: over 240 links in less than 10 days

  • Industry: Oil & Gas
  • Location: Italy – Ligurian Sea
  • Hydro: Hydro 1000 | ROV: HD72 | Depth: from 15 m to 100 m

Mission’s context

Mooring chains are critical components that secure offshore structures such as floating production systems and drilling units; their integrity directly impacts safety, operational continuity, and environmental protection. Continuous monitoring helps detect wear, corrosion, and fatigue before failure occurs, reducing costly downtime and preventing catastrophic incidents.

This inspection was conducted on a floating production system and was part of a project directed towards its life extension. As an inspection operator in this project, Bourbon DNT needed photogrammetry on the mooring lines of the infrastructure to monitor their dimension.

IVM Solution

Our Hydro 1000 unit was equipped with a tilt mechanism, enabling precise vertical movements and optimal access to both the upper and lower sections of the mooring chain during the inspection. This enhancement facilitated comprehensive data collection and improved the overall efficiency of the inspection process.

The inspection covered the six mooring lines of the FSRU Toscana, with each line examined at three strategic locations: the “top” section at approximately 15 meters depth, the “middle” section at around 70 meters depth, and the “bottom” section at roughly 100 meters depth. Additionally, the two mooring lines of the Mid-Water Arch were inspected at three corresponding locations: the “top” section at about 70 meters depth, the “middle” section at around 90 meters depth, and the “bottom” section at approximately 100 meters depth.

In total, 24 distinct locations were meticulously inspected over a span of 10 days, resulting in the production of 24 detailed 3D models. For each inspected location, 10 links were thoroughly examined, culminating in a total of 240 links being measured. A rigorous dimensional control process was conducted for each link, focusing on critical dimensions such as grip-to-grip length, link width, and bar diameter. These measurements were meticulously compared with the nominal values provided by the client, ensuring accurate and reliable data for the life extension assessment of the mooring lines.
