Photogrammetry as an ally for marine science monitoring campaigns
This mission is a great testimonial that photogrammetry has an application across many fields of investigation and can bring to life any object.
A local mission
In June, we participated in the third monitoring campaign for deep-water red coral (Corallium rubrum) led by the Parc national des Calanques.
Our inspection points were located around Riou Island and the Cassidaigne Canyon, offering us the chance to admire the beauty of our region. We surveyed various sites, from 70 m down to 330 m depth.
Teamwork is key
This mission was made possible thanks to the collaboration of key players in the Mediterranean marine industry:
– Septentrion Environnement, leading the monitoring report
– Copetech, operating the ROV
– FOSELEV Marine, providing the vessel Foselev Onyx
– IVM Technologies, providing the Hydro 1000, our 1000 m-rated stereo photogrammetry camera.
Why photogrammetry matters in these missions?
Photogrammetry enables the generation of precise 3D models of underwater subjects, offering a reliable basis for measurements and facilitating direct comparison over time. This allows scientists to quantify growth rates, structural changes, and habitat conditions with accuracy that traditional methods cannot easily match.
Projects like these demonstrate how advanced imaging technologies can contribute meaningfully to the long-term monitoring and conservation of marine species. We are proud to support marine research initiatives that aim to better understand and protect our underwater ecosystems, one 3D model at a time.
